Souplesse Velo aims to develop nationally competitive athletes who are community leaders, and advocates for the sport of cycling in both racing and training.
In the winter of 2024 Haegan, Patrick, and Autumn started to plan out a calendar of racing for themselves. Haegan was coming off a few years of racing taking a back seat to life, Patrick had spent two seasons showing up to races by himself, and Autumn was ready to really commit to racing seriously. As the plans took shape they thought, “Why not bring some more people along for the ride?” As the team took shape, we built it to fill a space. As a sport we have been fortunate to have an influx of new riders in recent years, but many of the cycling club structures that used to exist to help guide and teach new riders are far less robust than they once were. Teams have become specific, a masters team, an elite team, or large and loosely organized. We aim to create a team that allows riders to learn and improve and a place for experienced riders to share their knowledge and give back. In an age that feels increasingly focussed on numbers and strength, we strive to always put skill first.
The French term souplesse refers to smoothness and flexibility. To ride with souplesse is to embody smoothness, flexibility, and fluidity to pedal in a way that is both powerful and effortless. You cannot have souplesse, you can merely ride with it, and in the same way we know that the training is never complete. We always have more to learn: skills to improve, tactics to practice, abilities to gain. Souplesse Velo is here for the lifetime of focus that it takes to continue to ride with souplesse.
In our inaugural season we raced our bikes a lot. Our first cohort of 12 racers lined up over 240 times in 2025 taking 30 podium positions and 12 wins along the way. We raced in 26 cities and 9 states and logged over 3500 hours of training, but the biggest wins can’t be captured in podium pictures or statistics. We have watched things click as a new racer begins to understand and all of the sudden improves in leaps and bounds; we’ve seen racers give everything they have for their teammates success; and we’ve seen our teammates battered and bruised, determined to come back stronger than before. And we are just getting started.
